Statement 1 of 18

The six value areas

A vocabulary for the employment bargain.

These values describe what a workplace provides—not your talent, personality, or moral worth. A career can reinforce them differently across employers and settings.

Achievement

Use your abilities and finish worthwhile work well.

Independence

Make decisions and shape how the work gets done.

Recognition

Grow, lead, and have meaningful contributions noticed.

Relationships

Help people and work in an ethical, cooperative setting.

Support

Work under fair policies and capable, backing managers.

Working Conditions

Make pay, security, pace, schedule, and environment sustainable.

Transparent scoring

Equal questions, visible tradeoffs.

How the score works

Each value has three independently written statements. Ratings run from 0 for “Not a priority” to 4 for “Non-negotiable,” so every value has the same 0–12 range. The result shows all six totals and does not hide close scores.

Why ratings are not enough

Many people rate several conditions highly. Your result therefore includes a direct tradeoff question: what would justify giving up some of one leading value to gain another? That question is often more useful than the rank order.

How to use the result

Turn each leading value into observable questions for practitioners and employers. Compare the same occupation across settings, inspect real job postings, and test assumptions before paying for training or leaving a role.

Where the test stops

This short self-report is not a validated psychological instrument, job-satisfaction prediction, or employment screen. Values can change with finances, health, caregiving, access, and life stage. A high score never proves that an occupation will supply the value.

Work values test FAQ.

Is this the official O*NET Work Importance Locator?

No. O*NET retired that instrument in 2024. KnowYourPull uses original statements informed by the same six broad value areas and does not reproduce or administer the retired tool. The current CareerOneStop matcher is linked above.

What if every value scores highly?

That is useful information, not a failed result. It means a simple ranking may hide the decision. Use the result's tradeoff question and define which condition becomes non-negotiable when a real role cannot provide everything.

Does a career have one fixed work-value profile?

No. Management, schedule, compensation, autonomy, ethics, and team relationships can differ substantially across employers, specialties, contracts, and locations. Use career data as a starting hypothesis and verify the actual setting.

Can an employer use this result to screen me?

No. This is a private career-exploration reflection, not a selection or performance instrument. It should not be used for hiring, promotion, diagnosis, or eligibility decisions.
